Birmingham Jazz Presents: Calum Gourlay Quartet 7.45pm
This is the premier of Calum Gourlay’s new project as a band leader. Having spent his musical career as a bass player for others, he is now venturing out into band leadership and writing. Bassist, Composer and Band Leader Calum Gourlay brings his brand-new quartet and first small band album to tour the UK in 2019; featuring music written especially for and inspired by the band members. This new quartet features pieces that became big band charts and some that didn’t! As well as some brand new music written for the tour.
Calum has had a residency at The Vortex Jazz Club since 2017 and writes at least one new piece a month. Interviewed in londonjazznews.comCalum said… “I find it much easier to arrange something for big band if there’s already a framework for it to fit around, as starting a big band piece from scratch is tough. So, every few months I try to organise a play with a quartet or trio of some people from the band and write some music just for them. If any of that works then I can scale it up for the big band. Birmingham Jazz Presents: Electric Dreams Festival Weekend
The musical lineage of jazz has always included mixing genres, crossing boundaries and making a creative shift in the art form – and often other forms too. This short festival picks up this theme and explores electric jazz, as opposed to acoustic, in new formations but with a glance back to the pioneers of electrified music. It will also give the opportunity for emerging talent to express themselves, including a group of French Students and the return of Swedish stars.
Daniel Karlsson Trio The Daniel Karlsson trio’s music is described as distinctive and extrovert, clearly influenced by 60s jazz, soul and pop but with a clear Nordic scent of EST. All the music is penned by Daniel Karlsson. The Trio have since their album debut Das Taxibåtin September 2013 established themselves as one of the most interesting constellations in Swedish and European jazz.
From Scratch Birmingham’s own heritage jazz band, which emerged out of the local hero’s’ legendary Andy Hamilton’s Blue Notes. Led from the front by Mark Hamilton) and created by Guitarist Ralf DeCambre with Ray Brown on electric bass and Wayne Scott on drums. From Scratch has its own voice (they started again from scratch) playing an infectious mix of Electric Jazz, Blues, Ska and Reggae based tunes.
Fred Baker Trio Known mainly for his outstanding electric bass work, Fred appears in this Festival using his guitar synth. It’s been going down very well with a mixture of original material and special tribute set of Phil Millers’ pieces, from Robert Wyatt, Hatfield and the North, the duo Fred had with him and all the great Incahoots stuff. This trio brings together players that Fred has long admired.
EquinoxƎ EquinoxƎ is a Parisian band composed of 5 emerging talented musicians: These five musicians are from the prestigious CMDL Jazz School of Didier Lockwood, trained by the greatest French musicians. Bringing and transmitting Weather Report’s music, perpetuating musical and technological mixing, is Equinox’s challenge and goal. The formation is found around emblematic themes and forgotten, reworked and revisited, with the energy essential to this powerful musical universe.
Dave Ferris Organ Trio Originally from Cornwall, David is now resident in Birmingham, where he graduated from the Jazz Degree Course at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire; in Summer 2015. In this set Dave brings his acclaimed recreation of the original organ trio formed by Jimmy Smith. Expect infectious tunes and the most enthusiastic players in Birmingham today.
Mo Foster & Friends Mo Foster is Bass Guitar and Band Leader, who after forming the seminal 70’s progressive jazz/rock group Affinity (managed as it happens by Ronnie Scott himself) his career blossomed. He brings to the 1000 Trades an exciting new sextet comprising six of the UK’s most sought after musicians, collectively celebrating the music of major jazz composers such as Gil Evans, Michael Gibbs, George Gershwin, John Lewis and Jaco Pastorius, in a programme of personal favourite

1000 Trades Presents: Phil Thomson’s Arts Lab 7.45–9.30pm
Closing out tonight’s Lab are two contrasting artistes – the singular voice of poet and academic, Derek Littlewood and the musical story-telling of Vincent Gould, aka Weird Messiah – both with a perfectly balanced and captivating command of language. Vincent is an Edinburgh Festival survivor and song writer and Derek is a senior lecturer in BCU’s School of English. Expect humour, pathos, theatre. Easing us into their individual sets will be Mal Dewhirst, playwright and regional laureate, short story writers Debbie Murphy and Wanda Pierpoint and the perfomance poet Ben Davis, all of whom will be carefully curated by multi-published author and festival director Anthony Poulton-Smith.
