Birmingham Jazz Presents: Liran Donin – 1000 Boats 7.45pm

Liran Donin brings his touring band 1000 Boats, playing his debut album, featuring an exciting and fiery band. Israeli born bass player, producer and composer Liran Donin has been involved with high profile and cutting edge artists, bands and projects both nationally and internationally, a highly sought after bass player across a varied musical spectrum.  With his distinctive power house groove and his virtuosic approach to electric and double bass, Liran has been pushing the limits of the bass to unknown territories. He has been recording and touring alongside artists such as Mercury Prize Award nominees Led Bib and Polar Bear, BBC folk award winners The Unthanks, Ethiopian vibraphonist Mulatu Astatke, rock and pop artists such as Chrissie Hynde and US indie band Here We Go Magic to name but few. Winner of the 2018 BBC Young Jazz Musician of the year, Xhosa Cole brings together an all-star quartet featuring some of finest talent based in the UK. Alongside fellow finalist and bass player James Owston, powerhouse drummer Jim Bashford and Canadian trumpet virtuoso Jay Phelps, this band embodies the spirit of the Bebop and Hard bop greats. With a repertoire inspired by the great music of Sonny Rollins, Clifford Brown and Gigi Gryce this band lights up the stage with all the charisma, passion, edge, chemistry and spontaneity reminiscent of this great era. Join Carl Chinn for a talk which explores the history and significance of Frederick Street in the Jewellery Quarter as part of local history initiative Townscape Heritage’s programme of events looking at different areas in the vicinity.

The talk will cover highlights such as the Chamberlain Clock, the world-famous pen trade represented by the fantastic Pen Museum, significant companies such as Fattorini and connections to Rip Van Winkle author Washington Irving.  Carl will also explore the lives of local residents such as Kathleen Dayus who experienced kinship, community and hardship whilst living in the area during the early twentieth century. Steinway Artist Richard Fairhurst has been an important figure on the UK jazz scene since the mid 1990’s. His ongoing significance is evident in the recent album of superb duets which he recorded with the late, great John Taylor. This concert features Richard’s exciting new trio with the propulsive bass work of Dave Whitford and brilliant drummer Tim Giles.
