Ellington Piano Project
About Event
Eastbourne 1973 Reimagined – Echoes from The Duke’s Last Recording Fifty years ago, the last official album of one of the world’s greatest ever jazz musicians, Duke Ellington, was released featuring a live recording of one of his final inspiring performances, not in some famous jazz club in America, but right here in Britain, at the Congress Theatre in Eastbourne, Sussex.
“The Ellington Piano Project”, from leading jazz musicians Arnie Somogyi and Mark Edwards is inspired directly by Ellington’s ‘Eastbourne Performance’ and recorded using the very same Steinway Grand piano Duke Ellington played that night. It draws on harmonies and improvised phrases heard on his final album, “Eastbourne Performance”, as inspiration for new compositions and spontaneous improvisations, alongside reimaginings of Ellington classics.
