Birmingham Jazz Presents: Malija 7.45pm

Malija is the current small group led by Mark Lockheart with the amazing Liam Noble on piano and Jasper Hoiby on bass. They formed the group following an invitation to perform at the Rochester Jazz Festival 2014 in New York and from the very first rehearsal they had so much fun and musical empathy. They had all worked together previously on the 2009 album ‘In Deep’ but this time we all decided to share the writing between them and explore a sound world without drums.

It’s really hard to describe the music but Jasper Holby put it brilliantly when he described the music as “weird, simple, complicated, free, tight, floaty, ugly, beautiful and heartfelt, depending on your mood”.  Malija’s debut album ‘The Day I Had Everything’ was released on the Edition record label in late 2015. A second album ‘Instinct’ came out in June 2016 (again on the Edition record label) which was followed by a 22-date UK tour and concerts in Europe. £12.50/£10 members/ £3 students.
