Birmingham Jazz Presents: Dave Holdsworth’s New Brew 7.45pm
Trumpeter Dave Holdsworth has graced several key jazz recordings over the years, notably with Mike Westbrook, Barry Guy and Tony Oxley. At the same time, he recorded rather less than many of his peers during that important period in British jazz in the late ’60s/early ’70s. Anyone who has heard his marvellously expressive tone and capacity to subvert the listener’s expectations, rhythmically and melodically will welcome his (belated) debut album, Wodgi. £10/ £7.50 members/ £3 students. Another instalment of the regular ‘in conversation with’ evenings, hosted by cultural strategist Helga Henry. The events aim to create a space for considered conversation and insight, interviewing people from the world of business, culture, policy and government. For March the theme is mental health, an area that is enjoying a higher profile than ever before, but for which the answers can sometimes seem just as elusive. One of the most captivating instruments in contemporary music is the Oud. Using the oud and guitar as his vehicle, Stefanos imprints his experiences from Greece and London on his music, taking the audience on an authentic journey that uniquely fuses Mediterranean music with jazz. Daniel Kemshell is a guitarist originally from Aberdeen. A recent graduate from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire’s jazz programme, he has moved to London where he is engaging with the city’s vibrant creative scene whilst also working as a performer and composer. He is an active musician – with recent performances at the EFG London Jazz Festival, Cambridge Jazz Festival and Cheltenham Jazz Festival to name a few – and he works in a wide range of styles and contexts. £6 / £3 students. 1000 Trades Presents: Phil Thomson’s Arts Lab7.45–9.30pm
Filling our senses and firing up the imagination this month are three of the most versatile artist/performers on the Midlands circuit – with music in the company of Jobe, award-winning writer Lou Sarabadzic, and author John Wright – all deserving of the sobriquet A.K.A . Multi-instrumentalist Jobe’s line-ups include Irish folk roots, church organist and jazz – while poet Lou, a bi-lingual blogger in her own right, has occasion to offer us the wisdom of The Google Philosophers from time to time. John is an author and script writer, just as comfortable directing stage readings, but this time making a welcome return to premiere ‘Bus’, his new book of poetry. Each of them will generously share the space with our ever popular Open Mic sure to include anything-can-happen guests from the worlds of spoken word, music and short film. Free.
