Birmingham Jazz Presents: Steve Buckley Stars in Zone B 7.45pm

Steve was a key member of Loose Tubes (the highly acclaimed 21-piece jazz orchestra that became the focal point of the British jazz renaissance of the 80s). During this time, he was closely associated with the London African and Latin American scenes. His own projects included Orchestra Rafiki, co-led by long-time associate Chris Batchelor and featuring Kenyan Nyatiti player Ayub Ogada and Ghanaian drummer Nana Appiah, and the Pigs Head Sons, another Buckley/Batchelor collaboration. He toured and recorded with Ashley Slater’s Microgroove, Norman Cook’s Beats International and the contemporary classical ensemble Jeremy Peyton-Jones’ Regular Music. This is part of the tour organised by Jazz West Midlands and showcases Ballamy’s new regular quartet. ECM recording artist Iain Ballamy is an internationally recognised saxophonist and composer who has been variously described as urbane, original, freethinking and uncompromising. A multiple award winner and prominent artist on the jazz scene, Karen Sharp will be appearing with her long-established line-up of Nikki Iles, Dave Green and Steve Brown – world class musicians who also happen to be great friends. Together they create a unique sound that is warm, spontaneous and exciting, incorporating free flowing improvisation with almost telepathic ensemble playing.
